How to Make Up a Bedtime Story for Your Child in 5 Minutes
“Can you make up a story?”
It's a lovely question to hear at bedtime — until you're tired, it's been a long day and your imagination has apparently gone to bed before your child has.
The good news is that you don't need an elaborate plot to make up a bedtime story children will enjoy. In fact, some of the best stories can start with just three ingredients: your child, something they love and a simple adventure.
1. Choose Your Hero
The easiest place to start is with somebody your child already cares about.
That could be your child themselves, their favourite teddy, a beloved toy or even the family pet.
Instead of inventing a character called Captain Bear, try:
“Tonight, Teddy discovered something strange underneath your bed…”
Immediately, the story feels personal.
2. Pick a Simple Adventure
You don't need to create an epic.
Choose one simple idea:
Teddy finds a secret door.
Teddy travels to the moon.
The dog discovers a treasure map.
Your child wakes up in a magical forest.
Teddy has to rescue a missing birthday cake.
The sillier the idea, the better.
3. Give Them a Little Problem
Every adventure needs something to solve.
Perhaps Teddy's spaceship won't start. Maybe the magical castle has lost its key. Perhaps a friendly dinosaur can't find its way home.
The problem doesn't need to be scary. It simply gives your child and their favourite companion something to do together.
4. Add Something From Real Life
This is where made-up stories become really fun.
Include something your child will recognise.
Their favourite food might appear at a royal banquet. Their bedroom could secretly contain a portal to space. Their pet might suddenly start talking. A familiar park could become an enchanted forest.
These little details often get the biggest reactions.
5. Bring Everyone Home
Bedtime stories don't need complicated endings.
The adventure is completed, everybody returns safely home and Teddy is tucked back into bed — conveniently exactly where the story began.
And that's it.
You have a bedtime story.
A Simple Formula to Remember
Try:
Hero + Favourite Companion + Adventure + Small Problem + Happy Ending
For example:
Bella and Teddy discover a tiny rocket in the garden. They fly to the moon, where they meet an alien who has lost his favourite hat. After finding it inside a moon crater, everyone celebrates with moon-shaped biscuits before Bella and Teddy fly home in time for bed.
You can change those five ingredients every night and create hundreds of different adventures.
